Many believe that ballet started in France, especially as all our ballet steps are in French. Ballet was first created in Italy during the Renaissance - it was very flamboyant and "circus-like", with acrobatics. There were a lot of gestures which the Cecchetti method still uses today.

It later spread to France during the time of Louis XIV, where it became extremely popular in the French courts. Louis XIV was really taken with it and had ballets especially made for him. He became known as the "Sun King" after a role that he performed.

Ballet was developed and became more refined and structured in France before spreading to the other countries.
